On My Easel Today

Here's what I've been working on today.  It's kind of an experiment:

I'm testing the purple Sakura Pigma Micron pen to see if I prefer it to the black when I'm drawing facial features but more importantly, I'm experimenting with painting in a more subtle way.  I'm trying to learn to leave many more lighter areas on the face for contrast and only putting down stronger colours where I think that it is needed.

My aim is to play more with my watercolours so that I can start to appreciate all the different qualities it has.  I'm so used to just saturating the paper with colour almost everywhere because I like the vibrancy but if I can learn to reign myself in a bit sometimes I think it will help my technique overall.

I'd like to learn to infuse my paintings with different emotions by using various brush strokes, colour palettes and techniques.  I really want to grow as an artist this year, hone my talent and just keep learning.  It would be terrible to be stagnant and still be painting the same things in the same way, 5 years from now, don't you think?

I still want my work to be recognizably mine, but I also want to stretch myself without ever losing the joy that I receive from painting.

How about you?  Have you been trying anything new lately?
