There's something about fashion illustrations, especially watercolour ones, that I really love. I'm not a fashionista by any means, when I look at fashion illustrations, I rarely notice the clothes at all and my admiration of it never really comes out in in my own art. I think that it is my love of faces and the human figure in art that draws me to fashion illustration. The angles of the head and the posture of the body really fascinate me in a similar way that figure drawing does. I think maybe if I enrolled in a figure drawing class I may really enjoy it and it may help me to experiment a bit more with my own art.
I notice many fashion illustrations when I'm browsing on Etsy nowadays and I've chosen some of my favourites below - in watercolour of course!'Violet and Blue Hues' © Esther Bayer 2011
Isn't this gorgeous? I love the easy flow of colour around her head which reminds me of an afro!
'Julie Christie' Limited Edition Print © Cate Parr 2011
I love the above illustration because of how simply and beautifully it is done. The face is delicate and the surrounding blocks of shapes actually show many colours melting into each other. This melting of colours together is one of the things that I really like about watercolour paints.

I really love the contrast between her face and the bright splash of colour on her clothes. And her eyes are just lovely!
I may try some of the contrast between simple lines and splashes of colour in my own artwork soon. This post has totally inspired me!
